Abstract

It is human nature to want to be accepted and belong in a group. Belonging is a fundamental need that involves feeling appreciated, respected, and connected to others. When individuals feel like they belong, they are more likely to experience positive emotions and increased well-being which can lead to increased involvement with the group. Not belonging can evoke negative feelings such as rejection, depression, low self-esteem, and loneliness. These feelings can also affect physical well-being. In addition, chronic feelings of not belonging can lead to serious behavioral health issues such as anxiety disorders, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Increasing the sense of belonging takes work and effort to seek out activities and groups with common interests. This presentation will discuss enhancing professional identity, collaboration, and career growth. The impact of isolation, strategies to foster a sense of belonging, and the personal and professional benefits of belonging to a professional group will be included.
